A suspected explosion occurred on the Escravos Lagos Pipeline at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2025, near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo communities in the Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State, prompting swift emergency response efforts from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.).
In an official statement released on Wednesday, December 11, by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Andy Odeh, the company confirmed the incident, noting that initial assessments revealed a significant pressure drop on the affected pipeline. This drop is consistent with a loss of containment on the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline, although the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
“Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment,” the statement emphasized.
NNPC Ltd. disclosed that emergency response protocols were immediately activated following the incident. The company is currently collaborating with relevant government agencies, security operatives, and local community leaders to ensure a coordinated and effective response aimed at mitigating the impact of the explosion.
While the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, the company reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship.
“We are working diligently to ascertain the root cause of the explosion. A comprehensive investigation is underway, and further updates will be provided as more confirmed information becomes available,” Mr. Odeh added.
The Escravos Lagos Pipeline is a critical infrastructure in Nigeria’s gas distribution network, supplying gas from the Niger Delta to various parts of the country, including Lagos and other southwestern states. Any disruption to its operations could have implications for power generation and industrial gas supply.
Residents of the affected communities have been urged to remain calm as authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement safety measures.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over the security and integrity of Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure, particularly in the Niger Delta region, which has historically faced challenges related to pipeline vandalism and environmental degradation.
Further developments will be reported as they unfold.
