The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, has inaugurated 75 electric motorcycles for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Akume described the initiative as a strategic boost to the FRSC’s operational capacity and Nigeria’s internal security framework.
Speaking in Abuja, the SGF said the inauguration marked a milestone in strengthening the corps’ ability to safeguard lives and property nationwide.
He added that the initiative reflected the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improved safety and security. According to Akume, the programme aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritising citizen protection, infrastructure security and restored public confidence.
He noted that roads serve economic and social purposes but are increasingly exploited for criminal activities. “Crimes are being perpetrated on highways, taking advantage of congestion, traffic breakdowns and limited access in difficult terrains,” He said.
He described the electric motorcycles as timely and strategic, enhancing rapid response, manoeuvrability and surveillance, especially in congested and hard-to-reach areas. He said the motorcycles would support highway patrols and improve operational effectiveness during emergencies and security interventions.
He added that the bikes were cost-effective, environmentally friendly and aligned with the administration’s clean energy and sustainable transport policies. “Each motorcycle has a range of 150 to 160 kilometres per charge and a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
“They are equipped with sirens, amber lights, loudspeakers, digital displays, recording systems and secured compartments for enforcement equipment,” Akume said. He noted that while the FRSC was established for road safety, its role had evolved within Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
“Road safety and national security are inseparable. Safe roads reduce crime and support economic growth, unity and social stability,” he said. The SGF urged the FRSC to strengthen collaboration with security agencies through joint patrols, intelligence sharing, training and adequate equipping.
He commended the FRSC leadership and personnel for adaptability, innovation, dedication and accountability.
