The centenary edition of the Kaduna International Polo Tournament brought together royalty, governors, sponsors, and world-class players in a spectacular tribute to a century-long tradition of sport, culture, and unity.

Founded in the early 1920s, the Kaduna Polo Club has stood as a pillar of sporting heritage in Nigeria. First Bank’s Century-Long Partnership

One of the tournament’s defining highlights was the stunning victory of El-Amin Polo Club, which clinched the Georgian Cup for a record 16th time, defeating Kaduna Makarfi Polo Club 12–4.
Led by the talented Mohammed Babangida, El-Amin’s performance electrified the packed crowd and reinforced the team’s legendary status. The win coincided with the club’s 30th anniversary, adding symbolic weight to an already historic occasion.
Tournament Manager Atiku Abubakar Saleh (Baraden Maru) hailed the feat, describing El-Amin as “a cornerstone of Nigerian polo whose consistency has inspired generations.”
Governors’ Support Strengthens Polo’s Future
The centenary celebration drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries and state leaders, reflecting the deep bond between polo and leadership in Northern Nigeria.
Among them were:
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, the host governor, who reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Kaduna the polo capital of Africa.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, known for his support of traditional institutions that nurture equestrian culture.
Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, whose government continues to back polo tournaments that unite communities.
And Governor Dauda Lawal Dare of Zamfara State, who stole the spotlight with a groundbreaking announcement — the construction of a new Polo Club in Zamfara.
Governor Lawal, a former Executive Director of First Bank, described polo as “a bridge between tradition and modern development.” He praised the Kaduna Polo Club for maintaining high standards and vowed to revive the sport in Zamfara through youth engagement and infrastructure.
Royalty and Patronage: The Pillars of the Game
No story of Kaduna Polo would be complete without acknowledging its royal patrons — the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Zazzau. Both royal fathers have been unwavering supporters of the club and of Nigerian polo at large, attending tournaments, mentoring players, and lending their influence to sustain the sport’s growth.
