The Och’Idoma & President, Idoma Area Traditional Council, AgabaIdu, PFD, Elaigwu Odogbo John, has reiterated that sports is more than competition; it is education, character formation, unity, and peace-building as well as a viable platform for crime reduction and social inclusion.

Kaduna PPS Commends SWAN President For Building On Founders’ Legacies

He stated this, when the President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, led a National delegation and paid him homage at his royal palace in Otukpo, Benue State at the weekend.

“In a nation with a youthful population like Nigeria, sports remains one of the strongest platforms for youth engagement and empowerment, crime reduction and social inclusion, talent discovery and economic opportunity, national pride and global representation,” he said.

According to him, as traditional rulers, they are custodians of culture, peace, and moral authority.

“As sports journalists, you are custodians of narratives, truth, and inspiration. When these two institutions work together, the impact is far-reaching and transformational,” he declared.

He therefore, challenged journalists to use their pens, cameras, commentaries, and investigative work to the benefit of the society.

“You have helped nurture sporting icons, shape public opinion, and preserve the memory of our collective sporting achievements,” he acknowledged.

The Idoma Kingdom paramount ruler, used the opportunity to commend the sacrifices of past and present SWAN leaders and members who laboured, often without adequate recognition, to ensure that Nigerian sports remains in the national consciousness.

As National Patron, he suggested that SWAN should focus on constructive thoughts for the continued growth and relevance of the association.

“SWAN should deepen its focus on grassroots and school sports, especially in rural communities. Many talents are lost not for lack of ability, but for lack of exposure.

“Establish mentorship platforms where experienced sports journalists train young writers, commentators, photographers, and digital creators, ensuring professionalism and ethical standards.

“Partnering with traditional rulers across Nigeria can help mobilize communities, revive local sports festivals, and promote peace through sporting activities.

“SWAN can strengthen its role as a credible advocate for better sports policies, infrastructure, athlete welfare, and transparent sports administration.

“In this digital age, SWAN should continue to invest in modern storytelling, archiving Nigeria’s sports history, and combating misinformation with facts and integrity.

“In times of social tension, sports remains a neutral ground. SWAN can champion sports-for-peace initiatives across regions and cultures,” he advised.

He assured that as the Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of Idoma Kingdom, he reaffirms commitment to supporting initiatives that empower youths through sports, encouraging collaboration between SWAN and traditional institutions, as well as using his office to advocate for unity, discipline, and excellence through sports and media engagement.

“I see this patronage not as a title, but as a shared mission to build a healthier, more united, and purpose-driven Nigeria,” he added.

He thanked the leadership and entire membership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria for finding him worthy of the honour and visit to the Royal Palace.

Earlier in his remarks, SWAN President, Benjamin, explained that they were there for three reasons, which are, to thank the Ochidona for greatly contributing to making the SWAN @60 celebration colourful last year in Abuja by being present.

He further said that in view of that, the association was there to present him with one of SWAN’s highest Honours, the SWAN Nigeria of Sports (SNOS) as well as present him with a letter of nomination as its patron.

Among top dignitaries who graced the occasion were First and Second Class Traditional Chiefs of Idoma Area Traditional Council as well as the President and Secretary-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu and Chief Dr Paul Edeh esq.

The Chairman of SWAN, Benue State Chapter, Hembadoon Orsar, who represented the Vice President of SWAN, North Central zone, Mr. Olayinka Owolewa led a delegation from Makurdi to Och’Idoma palace in Otukpo.
