This is the nickname given to the American citizen (Timothy Dexter), born in 1747 AD, who decided to work in commerce and imagined himself to be a shrewd merchant. Merchants mocked him for his excessive stupidity. On one occasion, they ridiculed him, joking about the fact that the West Indies urgently needed Bibles and gloves. Dexter had no idea of the hot climate in the Indies, so he bought 40,000 copies of the Bible and 40,000 pairs of gloves. Thanks to incredible luck, the arrival of Dexter’s shipments coincided with the rise of a religious movement in the West Indies, so all the copies sold at a 100% profit.
Thanks to even greater luck, the arrival of the… The glove shipments coincided with the arrival of a fleet of Russian merchant ships at West Indies ports, where their agents bought up all the gloves because the Russian cold is compatible with gloves. The merchants’ jealousy of Dexter’s good fortune motivated him to invest all his money in shipping coal to Newcastle, England. Unbeknownst to Dexter, Newcastle was the center of the coal industry there, so he chartered dozens of sailing ships, loaded them with Pennsylvania coal, and sent the shipments to England. Instead of becoming the laughingstock of the world, Dexter’s luck changed again.
A massive strike broke out in Newcastle, the mines were emptied, and the coal supply in the region dwindled. When Dexter’s ships arrived in Newcastle, all the coal shipments were bought up, and Dexter made enormous profits, becoming twice as rich as before.
