With preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gathering momentum, religious leaders have mobilized 100,000 Muslim and Christian preachers to organize special prayers and fasting sessions aimed at promoting peaceful elections across the country.
The General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, Pastor Dr. Yohanna Buru, made the call, urging Christian pastors and Muslim imams across Nigeria to intensify prayers for peace, unity and stability before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
“we have to embark on ceaseless prayer and fasting toward making Nigeria better, and we have to support our leaders with prayers for God to lead them well”
According to him, religious leaders have an important role to play in ensuring peaceful political participation, noting that sustained prayers, religious tolerance and public enlightenment are among the contributions faith leaders can make toward preventing electoral violence.
Pastor Buru explained that the initiative is targeting 100,000 religious preachers, comprising 50,000 Muslim clerics and 50,000 Christian pastors, who will use their respective platforms to spread messages of peace, love, forgiveness and national unity.
He said the initiative was not the first time he had mobilized religious leaders across the country to pray for peaceful elections, adding that the campaign would intensify as the country approaches the 2027 polls.
“Our target is to reach 50,000 Muslims and 50,000 Christians through the media and religious platforms, encouraging them to use the remaining period before the elections to spread messages of peace, love, forgiveness and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
He added that places of worship would also be used to organize special prayers and fasting sessions for national peace and stability.
Buru further said the prayers would include seeking divine protection and strength for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, police, paramilitary agencies, civilian Joint Task Force members and local vigilantes as they confront security challenges,
“By God grace,we will have a peaceful election 2027,’
The cleric explained that radio, television, newspapers and social media would be deployed to reach more Christian and Muslim scholars, as well as faith-based organizations, with messages encouraging peaceful coexistence and responsible civic participation.
“We must remember that we are one family under God,’
‘We must remember that we are children of Adam and Eve,”
and we all have our holy books”
He also appealed to politicians across political parties to conduct their campaigns peacefully, avoid inflammatory statements and promote issue-based political engagement.
He urged Nigerian youths to reject political thuggery, violence, intimidation and the destruction of public property, stressing the need for young people to become ambassadors of peace before, during and after the elections.
