As the thunder of hooves filled the air and spectators roared with excitement at the Murtala Mohammed Polo Ground, the Kaduna Polo Club celebrated a defining moment — 100 years of polo excellence. The centenary edition of the Kaduna International Polo Tournament brought together royalty, governors, sponsors, and world-class players in a spectacular tribute to a century-long tradition of sport, culture, and unity.
A Storied Legacy Since the 1920s
Founded in the early 1920s, the Kaduna Polo Club has stood as a pillar of sporting heritage in Nigeria. What began as a pastime among colonial officers and local horsemen has evolved into one of Africa’s most respected polo institutions. For generations, the club has embodied grace, teamwork, and sportsmanship — values that define the “game of kings.”
First Bank’s Century-Long Partnership
A centenary of polo would not be complete without acknowledging First Bank of Nigeria, the club’s longest and most loyal sponsor. For decades, the bank’s commitment has gone beyond financial support — it has helped preserve polo’s identity and expand its reach across Nigeria.
From sponsoring trophies and upgrading facilities to fostering youth development, First Bank has been an inseparable part of Kaduna Polo’s story. The synergy between two century-old institutions represents endurance, integrity, and leadership — values deeply rooted in both brands.
El-Amin Polo Club Makes History Again
One of the tournament’s defining highlights was the stunning victory of El-Amin Polo Club, which clinched the Georgian Cup for a record 16th time, defeating Kaduna Makarfi Polo Club 12–4.
Led by the talented Mohammed Babangida, El-Amin’s performance electrified the packed crowd and reinforced the team’s legendary status. The win coincided with the club’s 30th anniversary, adding symbolic weight to an already historic occasion.
Tournament Manager Atiku Abubakar Saleh (Baraden Maru) hailed the feat, describing El-Amin as “a cornerstone of Nigerian polo whose consistency has inspired generations.”
Governors’ Support Strengthens Polo’s Future
The centenary celebration drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries and state leaders, reflecting the deep bond between polo and leadership in Northern Nigeria.
Among them were:
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, the host governor, who reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Kaduna the polo capital of Africa.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, known for his support of traditional institutions that nurture equestrian culture.
Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, whose government continues to back polo tournaments that unite communities.
And Governor Dauda Lawal Dare of Zamfara State, who stole the spotlight with a groundbreaking announcement — the construction of a new Polo Club in Zamfara.
Governor Lawal, a former Executive Director of First Bank, described polo as “a bridge between tradition and modern development.” He praised the Kaduna Polo Club for maintaining high standards and vowed to revive the sport in Zamfara through youth engagement and infrastructure.
Royalty and Patronage: The Pillars of the Game
No story of Kaduna Polo would be complete without acknowledging its royal patrons — the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Zazzau. Both royal fathers have been unwavering supporters of the club and of Nigerian polo at large, attending tournaments, mentoring players, and lending their influence to sustain the sport’s growth.
Their involvement underscores polo’s noble heritage — a sport where tradition, leadership, and respect meet on the same field.
A Global Stage: Kaduna’s Polo Prestige
The 2025 Kaduna International Polo Tournament welcomed more than ten international players from countries such as Argentina, South Africa, and Kenya. The week-long event transformed Kaduna into a vibrant hub of cultural exchange, hospitality, and elite sportsmanship.
Visitors from across Nigeria and abroad praised the high standard of play, organization, and the festive atmosphere that has made Kaduna Polo a must-attend event on the African sporting calendar.
Looking Forward: A New Century Begins
As the Kaduna Polo Club reflects on a century of victories and challenges, its leadership is also focused on the next hundred years. Plans are underway to modernize the club’s infrastructure, expand youth participation, and strengthen international partnerships.
President of the club,Muhammad Babangida , emphasized that the future of polo lies in nurturing new talent and preserving the core values that have defined the game for generations.
With sustained support from First Bank, the Nigeria Polo Association, and Northern state governments, Kaduna Polo is poised to enter its next century stronger, bolder, and more globally connected than ever before.
From its colonial origins to its centenary celebrations, the Kaduna Polo Club has evolved into more than just a sporting ground — it is a living archive of history, a gathering point for leaders and enthusiasts, and a beacon of cultural continuity.
As the sun sets on its 100th year, the echoes of the galloping horses still carry one message across the plains of Kaduna: tradition endures, excellence thrives, and the game of kings lives on.
