“The provision of more intervention support to the maintenance of primary schools building, including teaching and instructional materials, sustenance of the council’s scholarship scheme to support students and parents in this very difficult time. ‘’ –
The above quote was by  Honourable Abubakar Abdullahi the current   Chairman, Abaji Area Council in the FCT, while Presenting the councils 2025 budget to members of the council legislative arm on January 1, 2025.
As an indigene of Abaji,  I must confess that every line in the statement captivated my attention and spurred my admiration to the various policies and projects this youthful and capable chairman has embarked upon since the reign of leadership galvanized fittingly on his shoulders.
Never in the history of Abaji Area Council have the citizens and communities witnessed a swift rapid development transformation. What we saw was a tsunami of rapid socioeconomic and political development.
His election as the chairman brought along a sweet breeze that has kept blowing across all the nooks and crannies of Abaji, carrying along its path various physical infrastructure and socioeconomic reforms that transformed many lives across my beloved area council.
Among some of his laudable  projects and policies that has retailed a solid impact in my mind and other citizens and resident of Abaji is his unwavering mission and zeal to provide  adequate intervention support to the maintenance of primary schools  building, including teaching and instructional materials  and the sustenance of the council’s scholarship scheme to support students and parents in the current difficult time the country is passing through. This singular logical focus by the chairman was a glaring sign of having a leader embodied with empathy in his vision and mission.
In the often-overlooked corridors of local governance, few names resonate with the kind of impact and integrity as Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi.
As the current Chairman of Abaji Area Council, and the National Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abdullahi has emerged as a symbol of responsive leadership, operational excellence, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people.
His tenure, which began officially on June 22, 2023, has been marked by a flurry of transformative initiatives that span infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and social welfare. But beyond the statistics and projects, it is his personality—humble, strategic, and people-centered—that sets him apart in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Here are some of his actions and policies that distinguished him in Nigerian murky political terrain.
Infrastructure: Building More Than Roads
Abdullahi’s infrastructural footprint in Abaji is both extensive and strategic. From the renovation and furnishing of the legislative chamber to the maintenance of township roads and junctions, his administration has prioritized accessibility and functionality. Drainage systems and culverts have been constructed across key areas, including the South East Cemetery, mitigating flood risks and improving sanitation.
Electricity infrastructure has also seen a revival under his watch. Power cables were reinstalled in deserved wards like Agyana Pandagi and Rimba Ebagi, while transformers were purchased and installed in Yaba and other communities. Solar streetlights now illuminate all 10 wards of Abaji, enhancing security and extending economic activity into the night.
Water access, a perennial challenge in rural Nigeria, has been addressed through the drilling of modern solar boreholes in communities such as Gbakya and Nuku. These projects reflect a leader who understands that infrastructure is not just about aesthetics—it’s about dignity and development.

Healthcare: Compassion in Action
Healthcare under Abdullahi’s leadership has been nothing short of revolutionary. His administration launched free medical outreach programs across all wards, offering services ranging from eye care and diabetes screening to maternal and child health interventions. These programs have reached thousands, many of whom had never accessed formal healthcare before.
Perhaps most notable are the free hernia surgeries and caesarean sections provided in multiple phases. These life-saving procedures, often unaffordable for rural families, were delivered at no cost, underscoring Abdullahi’s commitment to inclusive health access.
Currently, an 80-bed Mother and Child Specialized Hospital is under construction at Federal Low-Cost Abaji. Once completed, it will serve as a regional hub for maternal healthcare, reducing mortality rates and improving outcomes for women and children.

Education: Empowering the Next Generation
Abdullahi’s approach to education is hands-on and heartfelt. He personally toured every primary school in Abaji, inspecting classrooms and offices to understand their challenges. This unprecedented gesture boosted morale among teachers and signaled a new era of accountability and support.
His administration distributed school sandals, textbooks, plastic chairs, and desks to selected schools across all 10 wards. More than 1,000 students—many from disadvantaged backgrounds—had their GCE/SSCE registration fees sponsored, opening doors to higher education and future opportunities.
These efforts are not just about infrastructure—they’re about investing in minds, nurturing potential, and breaking cycles of poverty through education.

Agriculture and Rural Empowerment
Agriculture, the backbone of Abaji’s economy, has received strategic attention. Rural roads such as Naharati Tsoho-Tupa and Pandagi-Nanda have been graded, improving access to markets and reducing post-harvest losses. Water schemes have been drilled and reticulated in farming communities, enhancing irrigation and productivity.
Abdullahi also placed local hunters on monthly stipends, recognizing their role in community safety and food security. His administration’s support for agriculture is not just economic—it’s cultural, preserving livelihoods and traditions while modernizing practices.

People and Workers First: A Culture of Welfare
One of Abdullahi’s most defining traits is his unwavering commitment to people and workers’ welfare. Within his first week in office, he gave each councilor N1 million to settle financial commitments and focus on governance—a move that fostered unity and productivity.
He has ensured prompt payment of workers’ wages and salaries, provided pensionable appointments, and supported widows with financial aid. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his administration distributed foodstuffs to vulnerable households, demonstrating empathy and responsiveness in a time of crisis.
Security agencies and community groups have also benefited from his generosity, receiving vehicles such as Sharon cars, Golf 3s, and wagons to enhance mobility and operations.

 Recognition and Leadership Beyond Abaji
Abdullahi’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. His election as National Chairman of  ALGON is a testament to his credibility and influence among his peers. In this role, he advocates for local governments nationwide, pushing for decentralization, resource allocation, and policy reforms that empower councils to serve their constituents better.
He has received numerous awards and commendations for his contributions to healthcare, education, and infrastructure. These accolades, while appreciated, are secondary to his core mission: service.

 Operational Excellence and Human-Centered Leadership
What truly distinguishes Abdullahi is his philosophy of governance. He combines operational excellence with emotional intelligence, ensuring that every project is executed with precision and every policy reflects the needs of the people. His leadership style is inclusive, transparent, and deeply empathetic.
He is not a politician who governs from afar—he walks the streets, listens to concerns, and acts decisively. His zeal for workers’ welfare and community development is not just policy—it’s personal.

Youth empowerment:  Carrying them along
His strategic planning and leadership style of involving youths to drive growth and development in Abaji , which encompass various sectors is timely and commendable. Again, his administration’s commitment and initiatives aimed at empowering local communities, promoting economic growth, and improving living standards are part of   the positive and logical policies that has defined and distinguished him among elected representatives.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy in the Making
As Abdullahi continues to serve Abaji and ALGON, I believe his vision remains clear: to build inclusive, resilient, and thriving communities. His track record suggests that this is not mere rhetoric—it’s a roadmap grounded in action.
In a country where local governance is often dismissed or underfunded, Honourable Abubakar Umar Abdullahi stands as a beacon of what is possible when leadership meets integrity, and vision meets execution, hence the need to rightly project him for higher national position, where, I consciously believe he is bound to deliver effectively.
At the moment, he is still the best candidate to retake his position as the Executive Chairman of Abaji Area Council in the forthcoming Area council elections.

Suleiman Jibrin Aliyu  ( Bin Ali) is an indigene of Abaji Area Council, Abuja and writes from Abuja.
