Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called for inclusive policies, affordable financing and stronger institutional support to enhance growth and sustainability of women-led enterprises.
Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of the ACCI disclosed this while marking the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, organised by the chamber on Monday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the IWD is celebrated annually on March 8, to honor the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Obegolu said that the theme of the 2026 IWD entitled “Give to Gain,” was a powerful call to accelerate gender equality through collective action, generosity, collaboration and shared progress.
He said that the theme also was made to share responsibility among other relevant sector, adding that gender equality was not a women’s issue alone; but a development imperative.
“The onus rests not only on women but also on government, policymakers, private sector leaders, civil society, other stakeholders to dismantle harmful stereotypes and practices that hinder women’s advancement.
“This theme reminds Nigerians that when we invest in women, through resources, knowledge, mentorship, opportunities, and support, we all benefit.
“That is why ACCI continues to advocate for inclusive policies, improved access to affordable financing, and stronger institutional support for women-led enterprises.
“ACCI is proud to host a two-day SME Exhibition exclusively for women-owned businesses. This initiative is our way of saying “thank you” and demonstrating our commitment in practical terms.
“This also go by providing free exhibition slots to women entrepreneurs, we are not only celebrating them, we are investing in their visibility, market access, and business growth,” he said.
The president said that the ACCI would continue to provide support systems that enhance access to markets, business advisory services, and growth opportunities. He noted that the chamber’s commitment to women’s empowerment was not symbolic; but strategic and intentional.
According to him, we recognise that there is no meaningful development without women.
“Indeed, we have witnessed first-hand that when women are given leadership opportunities and the right environment to contribute, the difference is clear.
“Their ideas, dedication, and resilience continue to generate positive transformation within our chamber and beyond,” he said.
Obegolu said that Nigeria is home to over 23 million female entrepreneurs, placing the country among those with the highest numbers of women entrepreneurs globally.
He added that women account for approximately 41 per cent of micro-business ownership in Nigeria, adding that the statistics represented innovation, resilience, and economic impact. He urged the exhibitors to maximise the opportunity, engage buyers, build partnerships and expand their networks.
Mr Agabaidu Jideani, Director-General of the ACCI, said that the theme aimed to help women transform their skills into sustainable enterprises that benefit families, communities and the broader economy.
He explained that the programme was designed to provide women entrepreneurs with a practical platform to gain visibility, access markets and explore opportunities for business growth and collaboration.
Also speaking, the Vice President, Women Development and Gender Matters, ACCI, Mrs Lawunmi Ismail, said empowering women entrepreneurs remained critical to strengthening families, communities and the nation’s economy. (NAN)
