The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on sports journalists across the country to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accuracy and professionalism as the world marks World Sports Journalists Day.
In an address delivered by the National President of SWAN, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, said the day was set aside to celebrate the “invaluable contributions” of sports journalists in informing, educating and uniting people through sports.
Speaking on the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Integrity, and the Power of Sports Journalism,” Benjamin noted that sports journalism goes beyond reporting scores and results.
“Sports journalism is about telling compelling human stories of perseverance, sacrifice, triumph and resilience.
It is about holding institutions accountable, promoting transparency, preserving sporting history, and amplifying the voices of athletes and communities whose lives are transformed by sports,” he said.
The SWAN President commended Nigerian sports journalists for their role in shaping public discourse on sports development, from grassroots competitions to international championships. He added that SWAN members have remained steadfast in documenting Nigeria’s sporting journey while championing professionalism.
Benjamin acknowledged that the rapid evolution of digital technology, artificial intelligence and social media has created both opportunities and challenges for the profession.
“The speed of information must never come at the expense of accuracy. The pursuit of engagement must never overshadow ethical responsibility,” he warned.
He reaffirmed SWAN’s commitment to strengthening members’ capacity through continuous training, professional development, innovation and strategic partnerships.
The SWAN President also appreciated the sacrifices of sports journalists who work under demanding conditions to keep the public informed.
He further commended the Federal Government, sports federations and corporate organizations for supporting sports and sports journalism in Nigeria, stressing that greater collaboration between the media and sports administrators is key to sustainable development.
To young and aspiring sports journalists, Benjamin advised them to build their careers on credibility, discipline and commitment to truth.
“The future of sports journalism belongs to those who combine innovation with integrity,” he said.
He reaffirmed SWAN’s commitment to promoting peace, national unity, youth development and social inclusion through responsible sports journalism.
“Once again, I congratulate every sports journalist on this special occasion. May we continue to uphold the ideals of our noble profession,” he said.
He thereafter prayed for SWAN and for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
