The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Sokoto State has affirmed Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar Sokoto as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.

PDP supporters gathered in their hundreds at the party secretariat in Sokoto on to witness the affirmation, which followed extensive consultations between party members and stakeholders across the 23 local government areas.

Chairman of the PDP Electoral Committee for the Sokoto State Primary, Hon. Yusuf AGIP, said the decision was reached after stakeholders agreed to go for consensus in the interest of party unity.

“We have unanimously affirmed Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar Sokoto as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Sokoto State,” he declared.

Hon. AGIP noted that since stakeholders have agreed on consensus, the party has no choice but to accept and rally behind the decision.

In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar Sokoto thanked party members and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to run an all-inclusive administration that will harness the state’s resources for the benefit of all.
“Sokoto State is blessed. We have a lot of potentials in the agricultural sector, we also have underground water which farmers and herders can utilise.
There are so many ways we can generate revenue as a government if the people give us this mandate,” Abdullahi Abubakar said.
He promised to tap into the state’s abundant mineral resources and investment opportunities to create jobs and boost the economy.
The Acting Chairman of PDP in Sokoto State, Hon. Hayatu Aminu Tafida, said the party remains united and confident of victory in 2027.
He added that the PDP maintains a strong political structure across the state and is open to collaboration with other groups and political parties.
“Our party will take up the issue of education seriously. If given the opportunity to lead Sokoto State, PDP will tackle the issue of out-of-school children because if we must combat poverty, education must be at the forefront of our discussion,” Tafida said.
Leaders of PDP women in the state also pledged to intensify grassroots mobilization, noting that women constitute the majority of voters and will be key to the success of the Abdullahi Abubakar Sokoto mandate.
The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and the provisions of the constitution.
Political observers say the entry of Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar Sokoto, an experienced leader, into the governorship race poses a serious challenge to the re-election ambition of incumbent Governor Ahmed Aliyu of the APC in 2027.
