Nigeria’s Political Experiment: A Cycle of Disappointment and the Urgent Need for Reset

April 23, 2026

By Adamu Salisu Ijakoro
Bello Mohammed Matawalle has, over the past decade, evolved into one of the most consequential political figures in Northern Nigeria—an administrator whose governance style blends pragmatism, vision, and deep grassroots engagement. From his transformative years as governor of Zamfara State to his current national assignment as Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle has consistently positioned himself as a leader focused on stabilising communities, strengthening institutions, and advancing Nigeria’s security and political landscape.
A Governor Defined by Action and Development
When Matawalle assumed office as governor of Zamfara State, he inherited a state grappling with serious developmental deficits and widespread insecurity. Yet his administration quickly set a tone of reform, widening the scope of governance beyond rhetoric to practical, people-centered development.
One of the most ambitious steps of his tenure was the strategic partnership established with the Russian Government. At a time when subnational governments rarely ventured into international economic diplomacy, Matawalle’s administration boldly sought collaboration to develop critical sectors of Zamfara’s economy. It was a forward-looking move that signaled his desire to place Zamfara on the path of long-term industrial and technological advancement.
His infrastructural achievements were equally far-reaching. Matawalle invested heavily in both rural and township roads, linking remote villages with economic centres and enhancing the mobility of people, goods, and agricultural produce. Entire communities that had previously suffered from isolation and market exclusion began to see renewed economic activity and improved access to health and education.
Reviving Education and Restoring Hope
Education under Matawalle witnessed a remarkable resurgence. Faced with declining quality and poor school attendance, his administration embarked on rehabilitating primary schools, upgrading facilities, training teachers, and restoring confidence in the system. Perhaps the most impactful was the introduction of a state-wide free feeding programme—designed with nutrition and dignity in mind. The programme provided high-quality meals daily to primary school pupils, boosting enrollment, reducing dropout rates, and generating thousands of local jobs in food supply and distribution.
This singular initiative became one of the most celebrated social policies in the state’s recent history.
Transforming Healthcare Across Zamfara
Matawalle’s focus on health was equally strategic. His government procured ambulances for every General Hospital in the state—an unprecedented development that enhanced emergency response, saved lives, and strengthened healthcare delivery in rural areas. By improving mobility and access to medical care, the administration ensured that critical health services reached the people who needed them most.
Champion of Agriculture and Rural Prosperity
Understanding that Zamfara’s economic heartbeat lies in agriculture, Matawalle expanded opportunities for farmers through simplified access to inputs, credit support, market linkages, and agricultural extension services. His policies helped nurture the state’s vast agricultural potential, empowering farmers, revitalising rural economies, and supporting food security.
A Courageous Approach to Peace and Security
At a time when banditry threatened to tear the state apart, Matawalle approached the crisis with courage and creativity. He explored dialogue, community engagement, and non-kinetic peace strategies—not as a sign of weakness, but as a practical step to reduce casualties, open intelligence channels, and restore calm to ravaged communities. His peace initiative, widely debated at the time, was nonetheless grounded in the principle that sustainable security requires both force and diplomacy.
National Impact as Minister of State for Defence
Today, in his role as Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle is playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s security architecture. His deep understanding of community-level conflict dynamics has strengthened the ministry’s approach to counterterrorism, anti-banditry operations, and inter-agency coordination.
Working closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to whom he has demonstrated unwavering loyalty, Matawalle has contributed to enhancing military morale, accelerating operational responses, and improving collaboration across security agencies. Within government circles, he is often described as a “field-tested administrator” whose insights from Zamfara have given him a unique edge in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security threats.
His role in the Tinubu administration also reinforces his importance within the APC, where he is regarded as a unifying figure in the North-West and a rising national influence.
A Political Figure of National Relevance
Beyond governance, Matawalle’s political standing continues to rise. He has become an essential voice in the nation’s political discourse—respected for his experience, strategic thinking, and ability to bridge divides. His support base stretches across demographics, reflecting the trust he has earned through years of service and engagement.
A Strong Comeback Momentum in Zamfara
Today, as conversations deepen around his potential return to the governorship of Zamfara State, public enthusiasm continues to surge. Communities recall his developmental strides, farmers remember his agricultural support, and families appreciate his intervention in education and healthcare. Many residents view his possible return as an opportunity to restore stability, accelerate development, and reconnect governance with grassroots needs.
Analysts believe that if reelected, Matawalle would combine his federal experience—especially in security—with his intimate knowledge of Zamfara’s challenges to deliver a more secure, economically vibrant, and politically stable state.
A Leader Positioned for Greater Impact
Bello Mohammed Matawalle stands today not just as a past governor or current minister, but as a national figure whose leadership continues to shape Nigeria’s socio-political and security direction. His expanding influence, strong grassroots appeal, and deep commitment to development place him at the center of discussions about the future of Zamfara and Nigeria as a whole.
Should he return as governor, many believe his renewed mandate would usher in a phase of stability, bold policy implementation, and accelerated growth—marking yet another chapter in his journey as one of Nigeria’s steadfast reformers and political stabilizers.
