ROTIMI AMAECHI: WHY THE ADC SHOULD LOOK NO FURTHER FOR ITS VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDATE

June 11, 2026

By Bashir Bello and Ahmed Aliyu

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited in April 2025, expectations were understandably high. Having built an impressive international career with Shell and Renaissance Africa Energy, many industry observers believed he possessed the technical expertise, commercial discipline and global exposure required to reposition Nigeria’s national oil company.
One year later, the emerging indicators suggest that NNPC Limited is steadily pursuing a more performance-driven culture anchored on operational efficiency, stronger partnerships and commercial accountability.
Leadership Built on Experience
Ojulari is not a newcomer to the global petroleum industry. Before assuming leadership of NNPC Limited, he held senior technical and executive positions across Nigeria, Europe and the Middle East, including Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) and Executive Vice President of Renaissance Africa Energy.
His career has consistently focused on production optimisation, project delivery, operational safety, investment planning and business transformation—qualities that are increasingly reflected in NNPC’s current strategic direction.
Delivering Measurable Results
At the recently concluded NOG Energy Week 2026 in Abuja, Ojulari unveiled NNPC Limited’s one-year performance scorecard.
Among the notable achievements were:
Average crude oil terminal recovery reaching approximately 98 percent between April 2025 and May 2026.
National crude oil production increasing to about 1.71 million barrels per day.
Improved operational stability across major export terminals.
Stronger collaboration between government institutions, investors and private operators.
Continued emphasis on commercial discipline following the Petroleum Industry Act reforms.
While challenges remain, these figures demonstrate measurable progress in restoring confidence within Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
A Vision Beyond Oil Production
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Ojulari’s leadership is that his vision extends beyond producing more barrels of crude oil.
His public engagements consistently emphasise:
energy security;
gas-led industrialisation;
investment attraction;
technological innovation;
energy transition;
stronger regional partnerships;
long-term sustainability.
He has repeatedly argued that Nigeria’s enormous gas reserves represent the country’s bridge toward industrial development while simultaneously supporting Africa’s growing energy demand.
Rather than viewing the global energy transition as a threat, the current management appears determined to position Nigeria as an important supplier of cleaner energy solutions, particularly natural gas, while maintaining crude oil competitiveness.
Building Through Collaboration
One notable feature of the current administration is its emphasis on partnership instead of isolation.
NNPC Limited continues to deepen engagement with:
international oil companies;
indigenous operators;
technology providers;
investors;
financial institutions;
government regulators;
development partners.
The recent gas agreements signed during NOG Energy Week further reinforce this collaborative approach, recognising that today’s energy industry requires integrated ecosystems rather than isolated institutions.
The Unsung Strength: NNPC’s Professional Departments
Leadership alone does not transform a corporation the size of NNPC Limited.
Behind every operational milestone stands a network of highly specialised departments whose contributions deserve recognition.
From Exploration and Production, Gas Infrastructure, Upstream Investment Management, Engineering, Finance, Legal Services, Procurement, Health, Safety and Environment, Human Capital Development, Digital Technology, Corporate Planning, Risk Management and Commercial Operations, each department contributes to the company’s overall performance.
Their coordinated efforts help sustain production, improve operational reliability, strengthen governance, manage complex projects and deliver value to the Nigerian economy.
Transformation within a national energy company succeeds only when every department aligns behind a common strategic vision.
Andy Odeh and the Power of Strategic Communication
Corporate transformation also depends on effective communication.
Under the leadership of Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh, NNPC Limited has demonstrated a more proactive communication strategy that keeps stakeholders informed through timely press releases, media engagements, digital communication and corporate messaging.
The Corporate Communications team has played an important role in projecting NNPC’s activities to investors, journalists, policymakers and the general public.
Their work extends beyond publicity.
They help explain complex energy policies, communicate reforms, clarify corporate decisions and strengthen public understanding of developments across Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
By consistently providing factual updates on production performance, investment initiatives, gas development, sustainability efforts and strategic partnerships, the communications department has helped improve transparency and reinforce stakeholder confidence in the organisation.
Challenges Still Require Attention
Despite encouraging progress, the journey remains unfinished.
Nigeria’s petroleum sector continues to face challenges including pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, infrastructure financing, fluctuating global oil prices, energy transition pressures and the need to expand domestic refining capacity.
Maintaining production growth while attracting fresh investment will require sustained policy consistency, security improvements and continued collaboration across the entire energy value chain.
Looking Ahead
The first year of Bashir Bayo Ojulari’s leadership presents an encouraging foundation rather than a final destination.
The company’s renewed focus on operational excellence, gas development, strategic partnerships, transparency and commercial performance indicates a leadership determined to build a globally competitive national energy company.
If the current momentum is sustained, NNPC Limited may further strengthen its position not only as Nigeria’s foremost energy enterprise but also as a significant contributor to Africa’s evolving energy future.
For Nigeria, success in the energy sector extends beyond increased oil production. It means creating jobs, attracting investment, strengthening energy security, expanding gas utilisation and ensuring that the nation’s natural resources translate into lasting economic prosperity for present and future generations.
