The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the mob killing of two innocent travellers in Gidan Kalu Village, Birnin Yero area, and announced the arrest of six suspects in connection with the incident.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the victims, Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40, both of Umar Village in Igabi LGA, were attacked and lynched on 1st July, 2026, after being wrongly accused of being kidnappers and thieves.
According to the statement, the two men were on a motorcycle heading to Tudun Wada, Zaria, to visit their sick uncle when some unidentified persons in Gidan Kalu, a few kilometers from Maraban Jos, became suspicious of their new motorcycle and raised an alarm of “thieves.”
“Out of fear, the victims abandoned the motorcycle and fled, but they were pursued by an angry mob. Despite their explanation that they were not thieves and that some of the attackers even knew them, they were brutally attacked and lynched to death,” the statement said.
Following a complaint, operatives from Birnin Yero Division swung into action and arrested six suspects. One of them was identified as Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo.
The Police said the suspects have confessed to the crime and are currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command, CP Rabiu Muhammad, psc, mni, condemned the incident in the strongest terms and vowed that all those found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of their status.
CP Muhammad warned residents against jungle justice and taking the law into their own hands.
“No individual has the right to assume the role of investigator. The presumption of the law is that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” he stated.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to the nearest Police station or other security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution, instead of resorting to mob action.
